Long island natural gas shortage

A new business and civic group called the Long Island Main Street Alliance claims the natural gas ban has delayed housing projects and small business openings in downtown Farmingdale, Central Islip, Bellport, Baldwin, Lynbrook, Uniondale and Huntington Station.

Currently there is a shortage between supply and demand–to the tune of 10,000 homes. Bruckner said if there’s a serious cold snap this winter, Long Island and parts of NYC served by National Grid will experience a service outage–a natural gas blackout, if you will. It is served by about 4,500 miles of natural gas transmission pipeline and about 87,000 miles of gas distribution and service lines. Those pipelines are critical to the future of the state: natural gas generates about 46% of New York’s electricity and is used widely to heat homes and buildings. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has grown so desperate to dodge the blame for the natural gas shortage hitting Long Island and parts of Brooklyn that he’s gone on the attack against his own Public Service Commission. You wouldn’t know it from the gov’s letter Thursday to John Rhodes, the PSC chair, but the commissioners are his own appointees.
